Health Canada Child Safety Legislation re: Cords on Window Treatments

DesignJoy Custom Drapery, Blinds & More knows that the safety of children and pets is paramount.
All products we sell are fully compliant with the most recent changes.

In response to the unfortunate number of child injuries and deaths due to window covering cords, Health Canada has recently enacted legislation to reduce those numbers. The new legislation is called “Corded Window Coverings Regulations – SOR/2019-97” under the ”Canada Consumer Product Safety Act”. This legislation is now in effect and, most notably, includes the following restriction:

Unconcealed cords on window treatments must now be no more than 22 cm long, or 44 cm when looped.

As a result:

Some older types of cord operation are no longer permitted for sale; this applies not only to products sold from within Canada but also products originating from any country, whether imported directly or brought in by Canadian residents.

(To note, the legislation is essentially the same in the U.S., so it will not be possible to buy non-compliant shades or blinds from American stores or online sites.)
